While the Texas Legislature is not in session this year, the House and Senate committees are busy conducting committee hearings on interim charges. The House Ways and Means Committee conducted hearings to review results of the Comptroller’s Methods and Assistance Program and to determine whether the “truth-in-taxation” notices effectively inform taxpayers of their property tax responsibilities.
You can listen to archived House Ways and Means Committee hearings and view minutes on the Ways and Means Committee Web page.
On May 17, 2012, the Joint Committee on Public School Finance System held a hearing on the history of school finance. The committee will hold additional hearings this summer. You can see notifications of hearings, listen to archived hearings and view minutes on the Joint Committee on Public School Finance System Web page.
On May 22, 2012, the House Committees on Public Health and Human Services held a public hearing on food assistance programs, urban agriculture and farmers’ markets. You can listen to archived hearings on the Committee on Public Health or the Committee on Human Services Web pages. Also, State Representative Eddie Rodriguez created a Farm-to-Table Caucus in the House of Representatives. The bipartisan group will focus on food issues, including urban farming. (On May 18, The Austin American-Statesman published an article about urban farming issues.)
On June 14, 2012, the Senate Committee on Intergovernmental Relations will have a hearing on interim charges related to recent court rulings regarding community housing development organization and local government corporation exemptions.
